Letter from International Society of Poets
I am writing to tell all of you, my fans, about my letter from the International Society of Poets after entering one of their contests. In this letter, I was cordially invited to the International Society of Poets Convention and Symposium in Las Vegas, Nevada, from July 20-23. This is the "single largest gathering of poets in history." By arriving, I "will be honored with two separate and very special awards for my poetic achievement." I quote: "After you read your poem in front of fellow poets from over 50 nations around the world, you will be presented with your very own International Outstanding Achievement in Poetry Crystal Award Trophy...$300 value...13" tall...so valuable that we have designed a special carrying case just for you to take it home." Another quote: "We will also present to you a beautifully crafted, antique bronze Commemorative Award Medallion to honor your poetic dedication and achievements." The letter also states that I have been nominated as Poet of the Year for 2006. I will also be inducted as an International Poet of Merit and Honored Member of the Society of Poets for 2006-2007. I'll be eligible for a $20,000 Grand Prize as well as a book publishing contract. In the young poets' division, I can also get a thousand dollar scholarship (runner-ups receive an iPod.) That's right-if I simply show up, I receive, at the least, an iPod, a crystal trophy and a medallion. Not bad. As if this isn't enough, Ruben Studdard will be there. I simply can't lose. God, don't be so naive. I'm a sixteen year old kid, who's only submitted 1 poem, and I received the same exact letter. If its not a complete scam, its a charade of apathy cloaked in narcisism. I've never read any of your poetry, but your haughty attitude is certainly not appealing.
I've submitted two poems and also received the VERY SAME invitation WORD FOR WORD. How can all three of us get the same trophy and awards??

I don't mean to be disruptive or trying to come off as jealous or anything but, I got the same letter as you and after I looked at the registration form I started to ''smell'' a scam from all the money they want out of you. So I looked up ISP and, saw nothing but BAD reviews from past attendees,

I'm only 14 years old and I recieved the very same letter for the poem I submitted. And though it is honoring it's not very encouraging to find out that everyone was honored also. I feel honored but if ew really deserved it why would they make you pay money to get the award if you can't attend the convention? They are a reputable organization but it makes you wonder.
hi, I received the letter to and sent off money to attend. Before the actual date my mother became very seriously ill and I was unable to attend. I asked them if there was any chance I could get my money back. They didn't even bother to reply to me.

I, too, also fell for this incredible joke. I can't believe anyone would actually degrade aspiring writers this way. I paid $75 to have my poetry published in a "respected" book, with other talented writers and what do I discover? THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF POETS WILL PUBLISH A POEM WRITTEN BY A SEVEN YEAR OLD; THEY WILL CALL ANYONE A "SEMI-FINALIST"! I'm so angry and would like to warn others of this scam and another rip-off associated with it called "Noble House Publishing"
Just advice from someone that got that letter and had their dreams put up. I have not had the greatest luck in life and i'll tell you this now. Go to google, type in "International Society of Poets convention" word for word in the search box, and you will find your blog. I'm sure you do have great poems that should be put in a book, but put them on your blog and keep entering contensts. But if you want to get somehting out of them, use them for scholarships. That way you'll have money to go to colledge and become a better writer than if you would if you went to this. Take it from me, my uncle is a writer with the publishing company and it hase taken him over 17 years to actually get a hard cover book from them. Don't believe me go out and look for a mystery romance by Jean Barret. But i would advise not reading it unless you are of mature age. Don't get so caught up in the materialistic things, and deeply research something before your parents waste thousands of dollars on something that is a scam. Life Quote *Time is a certain coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you.* This quote is saying that its your life spend it the way you want but spend it wisely, don't let someone tell you how you should live your life, but also don't let your good hard work be spent on a scam that goes nowhere.
*To be Great is to be misunderstood* Read the poem created by the man this quote came from, if you have no idea ask your teacher, take American Litriture, or look up Ralph Waldo Emerson. Take those steps in order and you'll realize how much work it is into becoming a writer than just getting a letter in the mail like i did. But i decided to really research before i wasted my, my parents, my families, and my closest friends money.

i got a call from my mother in trinidad, west indies, telling me that my brothers best friend was invited to the riviera hotel in las vegas to be awarded for his poem. he was so excited that somone recognized his talent, he took out a bank loan for TT$10,000. and sent it to the international society of poetry as they requested. he has never been to america before, he dont know about scams like this one even existing. this is a poor, humble, quiet boy with a speech impediment. i couldnt hold back the tears when i heard it was a scam. his dreams and heart has been shattered. why why why. what kind of an evil monster would do this.

Was reading all the comments from the other 'so called winners' and to tell you out there when my daughter, Brenda called to tell me she won the Bronze award, blaaaaaa to tell you the truth I was proud but when I read the end of her letter sigend by Steve Michaels that you have to sent money to receiving your prizes I was aghasted. The first thing that comes to my mind. This must be a hoax. So to said please do not kill the spirit of those people who really writes a good poem!!!!

That is very sad that all this is a scam. I was so proud for myself, but I really think I submitted a poem because everyone I read it to felt my pain and said I should publish it. It just gives me the motivation to find the legal way to have it published. Am I ever glad I didn't go to Las Vegas and get screwed over like that. My husband is an addict and I would have been very upset to spend that kind of money to be scammed especially when my addict does it all the time.
Don't let it stop you, go do what you have to do to make it published. Don't let anyone stand in your way form succeeding

I just mean to say that I think my poem is really good and touches on the addiction issues that we have to face, and I am going to do everything in my power to make sure my words get out and in a legal way that is true.

Hi guys well even i had recieved a letter sayingthat i am invited to the convention and that my poem will be read in front of so many poets.........i actually asked my parents and they agreed.but sumthing nagged me and i typed international society of poets and all my dreams got shattered.thanx you guys for poting your comments really helped me.you know what i had even got aletter saying i can publish my own book for less than $300 andi had only put 2 poems.to think i nearly wasted my parents money on a wild goose chase.Anyways guys keep writing.Adios...........
I got the same letter too. But I could smell the scam from a mile away because I've gotten other offers from this stupid company. It's really sad how they manipulate people like that.
I attended the convention and am very proud and so is every one else I know. I am 24 years old and the beautiful trophy is on my shelf right next to my two college degrees. Poetry.com even got me published by publishers in the United kingdom. I am very happy. I have received several other awards from them also.

Yeah. I'm 16 and got the same invatation. Theres no way I would ever concider going to the "convention" but I did get my poem published by them in an anthology. It is acctually a very nice book, it was cheep, and I'm glad to have it! other than that, though, a lot of this stuff seems like just a big scam.

I only joined poetry .com to get me ahead on a facebook aplication, and the fact they offer this deal on the same page as ad-ware and phishing sites should tell you something about how genuine the site is. I'm 15 years old, and not even a very good poet. I saw this online and decided to write a poem on the spot. It didn't even really mean anything. Just about fun indviduality. A 5th grader could of written it. I've never even really written poetry for fun or meaning, but they sent me the SAME letter and invited me to Las Vegas for the ISP. It can't be real.

I know this is pretty much just a repeat of everything already posted here, but... I'm 19 years old, about six months ago I received my first e-mail from poetry.com saying that I was to be published in an anthology. No more than a week later I received another e-mail stating that I was elected as International Ambasador for poetry. Shortly after that e-mail, I received another saying that I was voted best poetry author of 2007-2008 and was cordially invited to the convention in Las Vegas. I knew right away that there was something fishy, simply because you don't accomplish that many things all at once. The fact that you had to pay to go to this convention, or to recieve a copy of the book they were publishing pretty much gave away the fact that the people at poetry.com are con artists. which was originally posted in 2000. It contains complaints about poetry.com from people just like us, who were scammed and actually DID attend the convention. The page contains a petition for a law-suit against poetry.com as well as stories from people who attended about how they were threatened by 'higher-ups' at the convention if they were to try to spread the word that this is a scam. I urge you all to check out this page, simply to educate yourselves. I know how much it sucks to be convinced that your writing is actually about to recognized and rewarded and then find out it was all a scam, because it happened to me. If you ask me, poetry.com is an awful website and the internation society of poets is a complete sham. wow this is getting funnier and funnier the more i look it up. ok i looked up the convention because i got the same letter and everything so i wanted to see if it was real. i got a letter to actually be in there book of poets and there is no scam im really going to be in it. so if you get a letter like this then follow through with it because you never know, the worst thing that could happen is it not be true. so go for it, i did.

It is so funny to see your comments. I have met people that have went and actually won. If you are someone who doesn't have a hobby or haven't bee active, there is a cost for conferences, workshop, etc. It doesn't matter what it is for. Most competitions have entries fees. It doesn't matter if it is a pageant or a sport. The cost may vary. The people I talked to actually met alot of famous writers at the event.
They encouraged me to go when I received the letter. I didn't go, because of finanical reasons. If opportunity knocks, I may open the door.

I also got SEVERAL of these letters, I also had one published in a book from "The International Society of Poets". I wrote a few but only paid for one to be published, then I realised that it was just waaaay toooo costly to be sending money for every poem I want to have published and get no recognition except having your name next to your poem..I just got fed up and stopped sending them anything and they stopped writting...This was over 3 years ago.....But I am now following up on this because I was looking for a poem to show a couple friends...and I had it on their site.....

I received the same letter many times. I had 20 plus poems that were published or so they said but yet i can not find any of them because they are no longer "in business" . It makes me sad to lose my owrk like this.
